Lincoln is a small city with lots of facilities all within easy reach. Uphill is full of character, independent shops, the Castle (with its copy of the Magna Carta), the Cathedral and Bishops’ Palace to name but a few sights. This area also hosts the famous Lincoln Christmas market which brings so many visitors each December.
From Uphill/Cathedral quarter, it’s a couple of hundred yards’ walk down Steep Hill to the High Street and its retail offering, as well as the Stone Bow arch, and further down, just off the High Street, the beautiful sculpture entitled ‘Empowerment’ which soars above and across the River Witham close City Square.
Lincoln’s past as the largest port in England in Roman times, is still evident in the Brayford Pool marina at the heart of downhill Lincoln, a thoroughly contemporary area and contrast to Uphill. I particularly enjoy a summer’s evening eating al fresco over the water in Wagamama’s restaurant, watching sail boats and kayaks in the setting sun.
